2 ginger cats

More doodlings in ArtRage, then further fiddling in Photoshop. The background color came out weird, though. It looked greener in Photoshop.

Just doodling around with ArtRage. Making swirly colorful stuff.

I saw a little doggie's face in the swirls. La la la la la. That's what my brain is doing right now.

Homemade card and sketch

See? I do still make some stuff, sometimes, when properly motivated. This card came out nice, just as I'd envisioned it.

Collossal time waster meme

1. Do you like cheese? Generally, yes.

2. Have you ever smoked? Ick-no.

3. Do you own a gun? No.

4. Do you like listening to Christmas music? Yes, but only at Christmastime, and in moderate doses.

5. Do you get nervous before doctor appointments? A little, usually.

6. What do you think of hot dogs? Best barbecued on the 4th of July. Eaten on a bun with mustard and maybe a little relish. Or a chili dog.

Dang, now I want a hot dog.

7. Favorite Christmas song for all time?

Marshmallow World. It's actually more of a winter song than a Christmas song, though. It played all day in my head one June day when it snowed on our summer vacation. I’ve loved it ever since.

8. What do you prefer to drink in the morning? Just enough orange juice to wash down my morning pills.

9. Can you do push ups? I haven’t even attempted to do push ups in a few decades. I’m guessing probably not.

10. Who is your favorite Grey’s Anatomy Character? Uh, sorry, I am apparently one of the few people who don’t watch that show.

11. What’s your favorite piece of jewelry? I wear very little jewelry. I guess my wedding ring and the little chai pendant my grandma gave me are my favorites. I wear them both all the time.

12. Favorite hobby? “looking and finding” for bugs, shells, rocks, whatever.

13. Do you eat “exotic” foods? What’s “exotic?” Chinese? Indian? Deep fried bugs on a stick?? (Yes to the first 2, no thanks to that last one)

14. Do you have A.D.D.? That would explain a lot- Ooh, hey, is that the Goodyear Blimp? Be right back!

15. What one trait do you hate about yourself? I’m lazy.

16. Middle Name? yes.

17. Name 3 thoughts at this exact moment: I feel a little like taking a nap. I smell coffee. Should I divulge my middle name?

18. Name 3 things you bought yesterday? Avocados, tomatoes, and a jalapeno pepper. I made guacamole!

19. Name 3 drinks you regularly drink? Water, juice, occasionally diet coke.

20. Current worry right now? I haven’t finished started my Christmas shopping yet.

21. Current hate? Stupid people!

22. Favorite place to be? Death Valley, always. (OK, maybe not in the middle of summer, but hey…)

23. How will you bring in the New Year? I’ll be asleep before the old year ends.

24. Where would you like to go? Right now? I’m good.

25. Name three people who will complete this? You, you, and you. (you know who you are)

26. Do you own flip flops? Not anymore. I used to live in those things. Now I can’t wear them because of my foot issues, plus I can no longer tolerate the little thong that goes between the toes.

27. What shirt are you wearing? I’m in layers right now. A red/black/white striped ¾ sleeve t shirt covered by a fleece thingy. And a vest.

28. Do you like sleeping on satin sheets? I've never tried it, but I bet it feels slippery.

29. Can you whistle? yes

30. Favorite color? Green. Or maybe Blue.

31. Would you be a pirate? I don’t think I have the stamina.

32. What songs do you sing in the shower? I don’t sing, but sometimes I “rehearse” what I plan to say to the next group I will be touring at the arboretum.

33. Favorite girl’s name? I had the girl’s name (Deanna) picked out for both of my pregnancies, and I ended up having 2 boys.

34. Favorite boy’s name? I always liked Brice. Come to think of it, Michael ranks right up there, too.

35. What’s in your pocket right now? Ha! When I walked to the corner this morning to pick some eucalyptus leaves for my ET, I found these 2 weird things:

Some kind of game tokens, or maybe pogs. (Remember pogs?) Anyway, as I was picking them up from the sidewalk, I was wondering what I would even do with them, and now their purpose is clear: to be in this post!

36. Last thing that made you laugh? When that guy threw his shoes at President Bush.

37. Bed sheets as a child? There were yellow flowered ones that I liked. And some blue ones that looked pretty, but were cheap and scratchy.

38. Worst injury you’ve ever had? I’ve dislocated my knee several times. The last time was in public, on vacation, and it was not only embarrassing, it spoiled the whole rest of the trip.

39. Do you love where you live? I like it. I’m used to it, but I don’t love it.

40. How many TV’s do you have in your house? We have 2, but one will become obsolete next February. But we can also watch TV on the internet, so counting all the PC's it’s almost like having 6 TV’s

41. Who is your loudest friend? I’m the loud one. Everyone else is quieter than me.

42. How many dogs do you have? Two, Boomer and Marley.

43. Does someone have a crush on you? Boomie does.

44. Do you get embarrassed easily? Kind of. Sometimes.

45. What is your favorite book? Any good book I read becomes my favorite of the moment. I don’t know if I have an all time favorite. Maybe Lord of the Rings?

46. What is your favorite candy? Dark Chocolate.

47. Do you know all the words to the Fresh Prince theme song? OK, I just sat here and hummed it quietly to myself, and, surprisingly, yes I do. I hope I don’t have it stuck in my head all day now!

48. What song do you want played at your funeral? I don’t plan on having a funeral. No, I don’t expect to live forever, but I will want to keep things simple. And I don’t have a big family or lots of friends, so it won’t be a big deal.

49. What were you doing at 12 AM last night? Sleepin’.

50. What was the first thing you thought of when you woke up? How long can I lay here before the dogs come in and start demanding their breakfast?

Blog Consolidation

My blogging has slacked off considerably this past year. Maybe it's just a temporary slump, or it could be the trend for the future. I don't know. In any case, I had been pondering merging my art blog into this one for a while, but I didn't know how I could do that. Lo and behold, Blogger has added a new feature which made it possible. So now, all my art posts going back 3 years are here, and future artwork posts will go here as well. Once Inspired will remain, but will no longer be updated.

This is a screenshot of the weather widget on my Google home page. That temperature reading, (48 degrees!) matches what is says on the digital thermometer in my car, so it must be right.
So, it's the middle of the day, and it's in the 40's! Dang! If it gets much colder, I'll be expecting to build a snowman in my own front yard. (I wish)

Mental note: Fractalius

A while back, I found these awesomely altered praying mantis photos. Today, I learned there's an application you can get called Fractalius that does this.

I could do this every day.

Today Jerry and I went to the beach. There was a minus-tide. I really wanted to explore the tidepools, but it's just getting harder every time for me to navigate those slippery rocks. So after struggling through (but still enjoying) the rocky part for a little while, we just walked along the sand for a couple of hours. I brought home a pocket full of treasures, and a few pictures you can see here.

I love just walking anywhere in nature, but especially if there are rocks to be found (or shells). I get the same high from beachcombing as I do from walking up a rocky wash in the desert. (or bug hunting!) I don't care if my back or my feet are hurting. There's always more to see just up ahead or just around the bend, and I push myself to keep going.

I'll probably be hurting tomorrow. But that's OK. If I had a choice (and apparently today I did) between having a back ache from cleaning and vaccuuming or from going down (and back up) a steep hill and clambering over slippery rocks, I'd pick the second choice every time.

And I really would do it every day if I could.

A written complaint

Sometimes the notes the boys leave crack me up. Sometimes they crack each other up. Michael found this terse message from Brice on a carton of Almond Breeze in the refrigerator, and it sent him into a spasm of hysterical laughter. (OK, maybe you just had to be there)
In all fairness to Almond Breeze, it's good stuff. We drink it all the time. There was just a little bit left in this particular carton and it was several days old already, so I guess it was past its prime. And now we know what happens to that stuff when it goes past its prime: the viscosity exceeds tolerable levels.

Two new friends

There has been a cactus/succulent sale at the arboretum this weekend. I always like to go and look. I would buy a whole bunch of new plants, but A) I'm too cheap, B)I don't have space for all those little pots, C)I can't always keep them alive.

But after careful consideration, I picked out these two little guys. They're delightfully round, nicely patterned, and that's pretty much all I know about them, except their names.

Astrophytum asterias

Euphorbia obesa

The sale ends this afternoon. Tomorrow morning I will be searching the ground around the sales area for little fallen bits and pieces that could be rescued and rooted. Of course, most of what I find is ridiculously common, and often damaged on top of that (stepped on, mostly), but it's still something I like to do.

Recipe: Roasted Vegetables

I never know, from one day to the next, whether Michael and Jessi will be having dinner with us. This is further complicated now that Jessi is a vegetarian. I am mindful of having something on hand that she can eat for dinner, even if I've made something with meat for the rest of us.

I tried this recipe for Roasted Vegetables to go with a rotisserie chicken that Jerry made. They came out really good. I used less red pepper than the recipe called for, because I just had half a pepper leftover from something, and my guys aren't into bell peppers so much. I also threw in a few green beans and mushrooms. Other than that, I pretty much stuck to the recipe, and I really liked it.

(and Jessi ended up going out with her family last night, so she didn't get a chance to taste it. There are still leftovers, though, and I have another recipe waiting to try on her.)

Snoozy doggies

Marley. Look at those sweet, grizzled dog-lips.

Boomie. Now able to get up onto his 7-foot leather dog bed, otherwise known as our couch.

Leaf studies

I haven't done much artwork lately. I've got lots of ideas, but they pretty much spin around inside my head and then fizzle or fade away. But I had an idea to try something tonight: I tried making these leaves in Photoshop. I want them to look sort of like fabric, and 3-D.

The green ones are supposed to look like felt. I think the one on the right looks better. The red one is a burlap texture. You can see the texture better if you click on the picture to enlarge it. I figured out how to use a texture overlay for these.

Don't know what I'm going to do with this new skill, which, knowing me, I could forget by tomorrow. But here, at least you can see I did something.
